You are quick to pass judgement without knowing the specifics.
1. I have a copy (microfilmed by the Mormon church) of the original entry in the Kirchenbuch for the baptism of FW Becherer in 1834. There are no notes in the ledger with additional information. I asked for Konfirmation records- none exist. He was married here in Canada. I also have KB official extracts (baptisms, marriages, deaths) for his mother’s ancestors back 5 generations, the baptisms of all 10 of his half siblings and the entries for all data for his stepfather. Also the Militärstammrolle entry for this child in 1836. VERY expensive scraps of documents. Are there other official documents I should be looking for?
2. It has taken 7 years to retrieve this information. It took one Pfarrer 3 years to reply to my letter. And I do this as a hobby in my spare time. I am not retired nor able to commit 100% of my time to this. Many of these records I have just received in the past few months.
3. You state that the father could possibly be a military officer (yes, maybe not a superior officer) and that this would be an avenue to pursue. Then you state that I will probably not receive a reply to my letter to the Militärarchiv in Freiburg im Breisgau. Why do you say that? Are they not courteous enough to offer a reply? I believe they will. So, then, living half a world away, how do you suggest I proceed? I have asked to hire a LOCAL researcher in the specific area of Thüringen where my ancestors lived and there seems to be no one available. If you know of a genealogist for hire in Mühlhausen in Thüringen, Bad Tennstedt or Bad Langensalza, please let me know.
4. How do YOU propose for me to proceed with a structured, systematic methodology to locate this person who lived his first 30 years in Germany? And under a possible pseudonym. The man changed his name from FW BECHERER to Frank SCHATZEN for some reason, good or bad.
I am willing to listen to all suggestions.

There is no "vague" similarity between these 2 surnames- they are EXACT Siebmachers Wappenbuch 1701 Volume 2, Folio 160 shows this name as SCHACZEN. The INDEX also references this same CoA as SCHATZEN. In the Ev. Luth. church registers here in Canada since the year 1882 the name was recorded as SCHATZEN. I see no "vague" similarity. I have not claimed it as my own CoA - yet.

Edit
...........
Because Michael understood my message!
............
............
.........
I hope I could demonstrate that research (genealogy)
can play you unsuspectingly some stray cards!
But as I can see, you know that there is a certain "uncertainty"
and you continue to be critical of all your findings,
because if you blink with your eyes
--- you might just miss your real ancestor!
I wish you best of luck with your research
and "PLEASE" keep us updated!
Best regards,
Frank

Hi Frank, Sascha , Mac 1970:
I appreciate your comments and, yes, I agree that I should be more careful with my own assumptions. POSITIVE, constructive criticism of my research is always welcome. The negative remarks (directed at others, as well, I see) are not worth commenting on. Let's move on.
I have also just received a very kind reply from the Militär Bundesarchiv in Freiburg im Breisgau directing my questions to the proper archive in Berlin. I will keep you posted.
